WineSource Inc.
WineSource, the prototype for a chain of stores, offers a clear example of our approach to architecture. We believe that architecture is not really about building; first it is the design of places for people. Before we think about building, we design the experience people will feel in the completed space. The client for WineSource had a clear and fresh approach for marketing wine. His concept is to present a reasonable number of good, moderately priced, pre-selected wines. He also believes it is important for the customer to taste the wines before purchasing. "We began our design with a simple idea: the purpose of the store is to provide a comfortable relationship between the customer and the wine bottle. To achieve this we designed cabinetry with each selection represented by a single standing bottle. This resulted in a double row of shelves at eye level, where we then concentrated most of the light. We designed a tasting bar where customers can sample the wines. To attract customers to the tasting bar, we designed a wall featuring the company's logo, lit with spotlights. Overhead, an oak trellis draws the eye to the logo and the tasting bar. Adjustable lighting and portable oak storage boxes permit changing store displays. Materials are simple but warm: cherry-stained red oak cabinetry, gold-stained concrete floors, stained concrete countertops, and a steel sign." In addition to architectural design, we provided construction management services. Prior to joining Egan/Martinez design, our Mexico City associate Estudio Ana Martinez provided graphic design, logo, and signage to establish a clear and unified corporate identity.
