White/Alegria House 812 Algriers Street Castroville, Texas 2001 (Construction to begin Fall 2003)
Castroville, Texas was established in the 1840s by Alsatian settlers and is today a treasury of historic architecture from that period. Our clients found a tiny house from 1850 sitting in the middle of a 6-acre pecan grove. It had been added to in the 1950s with unfortunate results, and our design is based on removing these additions and wrapping a new home around the 500 square foot original house. Perhaps the most difficult part of the task was developing a roof form that would neither conflict with nor dominate the smaller original. Materials are the vernacular stone, stucco and metal roofs of the town.
