New Home for the Ryerson Family
Clear Springs Park
Bexar County, Texas
1994-1997

This project includes complete design services for a new home on 4.5 acres of raw land north of San Antonio.  The clients are a young couple with a family.  Services included complete design, detailing, and construction administration, from site design, design and detailing of the house, and selection of all interior finishes, colors, and lighting (the clients are using furniture from their previous home).  The house has two stories, a large terrace and detached garage.

The house is carefully designed to take advantage of its site and views. Unlike its neighbors, this house is set back from the road behind a dense stand of trees, in a location where the view is best. The driveway is gently curved so that two large cedars help conceal the garage and make a more dramatic approach. The plan was carefully developed so as to maintain existing trees to frame views and shade the house.

"The house is designed around a two-story living room.  Its spatial arrangement is reminiscent of the modernist houses of my mentor Charles Gwathmey, but the visual character is more typical of the Texas Hill Country."
