PRE-DESIGN
What is the basic goal? Clients usually don’t build just for the fun of building; usually there is a need. We believe our first job is to identify this need and let it govern the design. For instance, at WineSource we decided that the basic goal was to improve the relation between the shopper and the wine, so that relationship governed the design.
What is the program? "Programming" is the architects term for a projects list of requirements, and should includes spaces and budgets. We believe it begins with the questions: What will people do in this building, how do they need to do it, and what do they need from the building to do this? For Atascosa Family Health Clinic, this includes details of how staff will serve patients. Programming includes a list of all the individual spaces, and diagrams of how they will go together. Ideally this should then be compared to the budget before design begins.
Where is the project? Site analysis includes a study of the projects site and its surroundings, including views, climate, access, utilities and cultural context. At the Casa Gonzalez we combined the clients favorite views with a location that guarantees visual privacy.
