Hotel Isleta de Gaia
South of Monterrico, a small town on the Pacific Coast of Guatemala, at the point where the mangrove marshes of the Chiquimulilla Canal empty into the Ocean, we find Isleta de Gaia, an eco-tourism hotel we designed for a client from Paris. Both the mangrove canal and beach are popular with ecologically-minded tourists from Europe and Central America, and this little cluster of bungalows provides a perfect base for exploring the ecosystem, for ocean fishing, for relaxing after touring historic and archaeological sites, and for enjoying fine cuisine in the fresh Pacific breezes. . This project is a hotel comprised of 12 bungalows, a restaurant, swimming pool, and a private home for the owners. "Ideas del mundo, edificios del lugar. The organization of Isleta de Gaia uses forms both simple and complex. The primary axis is based on the sun's orientation, but buildings are arranged in response to local conditions of sea and sand. The hotel's arrangement follows the Chinese philosophy of Feng Shui, but construction is typical of the locale, with richly colored stucco walls capped with palm roofs. Colors are being derived from local nature."
