Hellerstein Studios 6 West 22nd Street New York City, New York 1987-88
This project was to provide complete space planning and interior design services for a 5,000 square foot commercial photography studio on the top floor of an old building in Manhattan’s Photo District. The client, Steve Hellerstein, has since relocated into a much larger studio. The program included facilities for visiting art directors, who normally spend long hours in the studio during photo sessions. Other elements included scenery shop, darkroom, accounting, a kitchen for photographing food products, and models’ dressing rooms. "The client had a low budget, so our design takes maximum advantage of light and space but uses inexpensive materials. Most Manhattan studios are entered through small vestibules, so we chose to maximize the effect of distance and space at the entry. We combined natural and artificial light to maximize the drama of space, and used sculptural forms to define functional elements."
