Offices for Cato/Gobe & Associates
The client, currently known as Desgrippes Gobe Group, is a New York and Paris-based design firm specializing in corporate imaging and package design for clients including Gillete, The Limited Corporation, and others. The project was to design 18,000 sq. ft. of new offices in a 19th century cast-iron loft building near Astor Place in Manhattan. The scope of work included complete space-planning and interior design services: design of all construction, design of all lighting and mechanical systems, design and selection of all furnishings and interior finishes, including custom design of conference tables and display cases. "In this project, we explored the idea of order as an order of remembered experiences, based on memories of Venice. There I had experienced an order which was not geometric; it was an order of memories and fragmented vistas. I decided to arrange spaces to create a geometric irregularity similar to the irregular experience of Venetian streets, with three main "piazzas," or large clearly defined spaces. The unifying gesture was to use the columns as organizing "streetlights" around which we wove the functional spaces and circulation."
